It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted over here, and I think it’s about time I explain why.
Colby and I are in a cooking competition and the grand prize is our own restaurant space, six months free rent, and $50,000. It’s safe to say it’s taking up a lot of our time.
The Shops at South Town
Back in January, my dad tagged us in a post on Facebook all about this event called the Taste for the Space. The Shops at South Town, the mall near our house, was accepting entries to their competition to win a spot in their dining terrace, along with all the amenities described above. One of our dreams for the future has been to open our own restaurant, so obviously, we couldn’t pass up this opportunity and we decided to enter.
We spent the next month coming up with our restaurant concept, filling out the forms, and creating a video. Finally, in the first week of March, we submitted our application and crossed our fingers. In a few weeks we would find out if we were one of the finalists.
Our Restaurant Concept
Halfway through April, the results finally came in. We were in! We’d be competing against 12 other hopefuls, including everything from food trucks to existing restaurants to a few concepts like ours. And we only had four weeks to prepare for the competition on May 6.
We got to work fleshing out our concept into a full-fledged restaurant, including creating a business plan, forecasting the financials, creating a logo and menu, and formulating our target customer base and marketing plan. We tested recipes, tweaked ingredients, ate way too much pasta, and wrangled opinions out of our friends by offering them free food.
We could finally introduce our dream: A quick-service eatery serving healthy, crave-able food in a bowl.
Our menu would consist of pastas, smoothie bowls, salads, and rice bowls, all handmade with fresh, local ingredients.
The Taste for the Space
Now, the day has come. This Saturday we will head to the mall and hand out hundreds of samples of our signature dish, a homemade whole-wheat pasta loaded with tomatoes, berries, nuts and fresh cheese.
Here’s how the competition works:
• The event runs from 12-4 pm on Saturday at the Shops at South Town
• Attendees will get to sample dishes from all 13 competitors
• Votes will be texted in and tallied up to determine the favorites
• Judges will rate the competitors on a list of other items that will also be taken into consideration (cleanliness, concept, presentation, etc.)
• These results will be combined to declare the winner (not sure when the winner will actually be announced, but you know)
So basically, it comes down to this: if you’re in Utah, we would love for you to come on Saturday and taste our dish. Even if you don’t have a ticket, come by and we will make sure you get some yummy food. Seriously.
Winning this competition would truly be a dream come true for us and we are so excited to put our hearts into this event! Thank you for all your support, now and always.
