If you find yourself scouring the Internet day-in and day-out for new places to eat in the Salty City, look no further. Just hop in your car and head to From Scratch! This tucked-away spot was one of the best we’ve been to in a while and we’re already craving more.
From Scratch takes their name seriously and literally makes everything they serve from scratch – down to the ketchup and mustard served with their delectable burgers and fries. I had heard a lot about this place but hadn’t had the chance to stop by yet, so last week when we went on our date night to the artsy Broadway Theater downtown, I suggested we eat dinner here since it was right around the corner.
Gallivan Avenue was quiet as we strolled down the street and we were seated by the window, taking in the beautiful interior of the restaurant complete with a wood-fired oven and a flour mill hidden behind the barn door at one end. We looked over the menu and immediately knew we had to try both the burgers and the pizza, so after some fantastic recommendations from our server, I ordered the Scratch Burger and Colby, the Fennel Sausage pizza.
They arrived in front of us and after my first french fry, I was hooked. That homemade ketchup is no joke. We immediately dug into the entrees and let me tell you, this was one of the best burgers I have had in Salt Lake, and definitely the best one I’ve had that doesn’t make me feel like I’ve gained ten pounds after I eat it. The brioche bun was divine and the hamburger itself was cooked to perfection: juicy, soft, and flavorful. Shoestring onions add that satisfying crunch and it was a little sad to only get to eat half of it before I handed it over to Colby to try.
Luckily, that handoff also included the fennel sausage pizza being set in front of me, and I was off on a whole new flavor adventure. The first thing I noticed about the pizza was how truly incredible the crust is. It’s the pizza crust that dreams are made of: just a little crispy, but warm and soft and supple on the inside. Just thinking about it, I can almost taste it. But let’s not forget the actual toppings on the pizza, because they were equally as delicious and you could tell just how fresh they were. The sausage was exquisite, the onions added just enough flavor paired with the impeccable creme fraiche, and don’t even get me started on the cheese.
We devoured the entire meal, trading off bites of the burger and slices of the pizza until only the fries were left, and then we gobbled those up too. Our pending movie date didn’t leave us with time for dessert, but obviously, that’s next on the list.
Basically, it’s going to be hard to go anywhere new in SLC now that we know how good From Scratch is. I’m sure we’ll be seeing you there soon!
